Julie Jankowski
Julie Jankowski is an Indiana painter known for her direct, fluid painting style and dynamic compositions.
She relies on keen observation of her subjects, which range from night cityscapes to nudes in landscapes,
most painted "en plein aire" (on location). Dogs have also been a recurring theme in her paintings, often appearing in
her cityscapes. She describes the dogs as being a symbol of protection, companionship and fearlessness,
and as a metaphor for herself.. She chose dogs for the subjects of her first screenprints at afa Press.
Julie Jankowski studied painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and went on to receive
a BFA (1984) from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. She furthered her interest in figurative painting at
the Vermont Studio Colony in Johnson, Vermont, and was an artist in residence at the School of the Art Institute of
Chicago's Ox-Bow Summer School in Michigan. Her interest in prints dates from her experiences at Ball State,
where she was a Printmaking Lab Assistant. She has been a faculty member of Indiana's South Bend Regional Museum of Art,
and the Salem State College in Salem, Massachusetts.
